TESTOSTERONE MICRODOSING (INJECTIONS)

Testosterone Microdosing is well-becoming a popular method of testosterone replacement therapy in the U.S. Daily Testosterone Microdosing offers three advantages to conventional weekly/biweekly testosterone injections. First of all, with microdosing, testosterone is injected subcutaneously a few millimeters under the skin using a tiny insulin syringe. This is more comfortable than the conventional 1 - 1.5 inch needles used with intramuscular weekly/biweekly injections. Second, by testosterone microdosing allows patients the ability to achieve optimal testosterone levels within 24 hours and maintain steady-state as long as they are consistent with daily dosing. Thirdly, by injecting small amounts of testosterone on a daily basis, your testosterone vial actually lasts longer.

HOW TO DECIDE BETWEEN TESTOSTERONE MICRODOSING vs TESTOSTERONE PELLET THERAPY

There are advantages to both Testosterone Microdosing and Testosterone Pellet Therapy. Which one a patients pursues is a personal preference based on their comfort level.

Advantages of Testosterone Microdosing

  • Reaching optimal physiologic levels with microdosing can be achieve within 24 hours (vs weeks with Testosterone Pellet Therapy)

  • Daily dosage can be adjusted at anytime allowing patients to maintain steady state levels (vs slow decline with pellet therapy of over 5-7 months eventually requiring repeat insertion)

  • Self-administered tiny injections (does not require administration at a doctors office)

Advantages of Testosterone Pellet Therapy

  • Once the pellets are inserted, therapy is typically hassle-free (vs daily self-administration).

  • After optimal peak levels are achieved (typically between 6-10 wks), most patients can remain in therapeutic levels for up to 5 or more months before requiring their next insertion.

  • Great option for individuals who have a fear of needles

More Details about Testosterone Microdosing

Men’s testicles produce an average of 6-7mg of testosterone a day. Just over half this testosterone is rendered unavailable due to it’s binding to a protein called Sex Hormone Binding Globulin (SHBG). Approximately 44% of testosterone is bound to circulating albumin and approximately 2-3% of testosterone is unbound, free testosterone. Your body is only able to utilize free testosterone and testosterone bound to albumin.

CONVENTIONAL WEEKLY INJECTIONS vs DAILY MICRODOSING INJECTIONS

Conventional testosterone injections are administered intramuscularly once a week or every two weeks at 200-250mg per injection. In a logical sense, this would translate to about 14-17mg of testostosterone a day, respectively. But this is FAR from the truth. Most research done with testosterone injections at 200mg shows that the blood levels quickly reach supra-physiologic levels in 1-3 days, then they slow start to drop to baseline levels in 8-10 days. During this time, testosterone is only at it’s optimal physiologic levels for 50-60% of that time frame. During the time Testosterone is at supra physiologic levels, there is an excess of testosterone that converts into dihydrotestosterone (which can aggrevate the prostate gland, hair follicles, and oil glands) and estradiol (which can lead to increased breast tissue growth (gynecomastia). The most dangerous side effect of excessively high testosterone is its stimulation on the bone marrow to produce excessive red blood cells (secondary polycythemia) causing the blood to become thick and more difficult to circulate through vital organs (heart, brain, kidney, liver, spleen, etc).

Daily Testosterone Microdosing offers three advantages to conventional weekly/biweekly testosterone injections. First of all, testosterone with microdosing is injected subcutaneously a few millimeters under the skin using a tiny insulin syringe. This is more comfortable than the conventional 1 - 1.5 inch needles used with intramuscular injections. Second, by injecting a smaller amount (ie 10mg) on a daily basis, not only do you consistently reach a physiologic (not supraphysiologic) level each day. Thirdly, by injecting small amounts each day, your testosterone vial lasts longer.

IS THIS COVERED BY INSURANCE?

The consultation visit and blood work are typically covered by most insurances.  We utilized custom compounded testosterone to decrease the viscosity of the testosterone. This enables it to be injected subcutaneously more comfortably. Custom compounded medications are not on insurance medication formularies, and therefore are not covered. However, our testosterone is compounded at FDA 503B-certified facility in Texas or in Florida to ensure excellent quality control.

The costs of Testosterone Microdosing ranges from $105 to $135 per month based on the daily dosing.
